Inglewood police officer involved in fatal shooting of homeless man
It was the fourth officer-involved shooting in the city in as many months.
An Inglewood Police Department officer was involved this afternoonin the shooting death of a homeless man, a witness and the Los Angeles County coroner's office reported.
It was the fourth officer-involved shooting in Inglewood in as many months.
A photographer at the scene said the man who was fatally shot was homeless. Local television showed images of an overturned shopping cart filled with soiled clothing said to have belonged to the dead man.
The man was pronounced dead at UCLA Medical Center at 2:50 p.m., said Jerry McKibben, an investigator with the coroner's office.
"It was an officer-involved shooting involving the Inglewood Police Department," said McKibben, who said he had no other information. The body had yet to be moved from the medical center to the morgue. .
The shooting occurred at the intersection of Market Street and Hillcrest Boulevard.
The Inglewood Police Department had no comment on the incident and refused to confirm that a shooting involving one of its officers had occurred, Lt. Michael Marshall said.
The department is now under investigation by the Office of Independent Review, a law enforcement monitor created by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors. Michael Gennaco, chief attorney for the office, said the examination of the Police Department would cover training, supervision, policy and protocol.
Two Inglewood officers involved in the May 11 shooting that left Michael Byoune, 19, dead and two others wounded, have been returned to active duty by Inglewood Police Chief Jacqueline Seabrooks.
Two fatal shootings involving Inglewood officers occurred in July. Ruben Walton Ortega, a 23-year-old alleged gang member, was shot and killed on July 1 and Kevin Wicks, 38, died on July 21.
Families of the three previous shooting victims have filed a $25-million lawsuit against the city and the Police Department.
