Police say a gang-related shooting in Echo Park left a man critically wounded when he was shot in the back of the head while sitting in his vehicle.

Roger Lopez, 34, was shot at 6:45 p.m. Monday in the 1900 block of Echo Park Avenue, Los Angeles police said.

By the time police arrived at the scene, two people who had been with Lopez when he was shot had taken him to Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center, said Los Angeles Police Det. Lisa Governo.

Lopez was in critical condition this morning after being treated for a single gunshot wound, Governo said.

The two people who took Lopez to the hospital were not injured and were cooperating with investigators, she said. She did not know which gangs were involved or whether Lopez or his friends had gang affiliations.

Suspect descriptions were not available this morning, Governo said. Anyone with information may contact investigators at (213) 847-4261.
