Boller's season is over

September 04, 2008|From the Associated Press

Kyle Boller was placed on injured reserve Wednesday by the Baltimore Ravens, ending his season and raising the question of whether the quarterback will throw another pass for the team.

Boller has been sidelined since hurting his shoulder in Baltimore's second exhibition against the Minnesota Vikings on Aug. 16.

"He has got either one of two injuries, either the torn labrum or he's got, I don't know the medical term, but there's a connection in the biceps to the shoulder that might be a problem," Ravens Coach John Harbaugh said. "The torn labrum has not responded to the medication, and the other injury is a season ender. He's done."

Boller, selected with the 19th pick in the 2003 draft, was preparing for his sixth NFL season, all with Baltimore. He is in the final year of his contract, and it is uncertain if the Ravens will want to bring him back. Although Boller has started 42 games, his inconsistent play thrust him into a competition this summer with Troy Smith and rookie Joe Flacco to determine the starting quarterback.

Flacco won the job because of Boller's injury and Smith's lengthy battle with infected tonsils.

Jacksonville Jaguars offensive tackle Richard Collier remained in critical condition a day after getting shot in the front seat of his Cadillac Escalade.

Collier, 26, and former teammate Kenneth Pettway were waiting for two women outside an apartment complex early Tuesday when a gunman fired into the vehicle, according to the Jacksonville (Fla.) Sheriff's Office. Collier was shot several times, but it was unclear where the 6-foot-7, 345-pound lineman was hit. Pettway was not injured.

Collier had surgery at Shands Jacksonville Medical Center, and updates on his condition have been scarce because family members requested privacy. Coach Jack Del Rio said Wednesday that Collier was still in critical condition.

Carolina Panthers backup quarterback Matt Moore has a broken bone in his left leg.

Moore was injured during the final exhibition at Pittsburgh last week. He attempted to practice on Wednesday, but had pain when he tried to push off his leg. X-rays revealed the fracture.

New England Patriots Coach Bill Belichick expects quarterback Tom Brady to be ready Sunday for the season opener against Kansas City after the NFL's reigning most valuable player missed all four exhibitions because of an injured right foot.

Brady, who participated fully in practice Wednesday, said Monday the condition of his foot has improved and he could have played in all four exhibitions.
