Suspicious package shuts down 101 Freeway

All lanes in Woodland Hills are reopened after authorities find no threat to commuters.

All lanes on the 101 Freeway in Woodland Hills were reopened after being temporarily shut down as authorities investigated a suspicious package found on an overpass.

Immediately after the package was reported at 8:53 a.m., all lanes and onramps near Valley Circle Boulevard were closed, said Officer Anthony Martin of the California Highway Patrol.

The lanes were reopened at 9:33 a.m., when authorities determined that freeway commuters were not threatened. The package found on the Valley Circle Boulevard overpass resembled a suitcase, authorities said.

A bomb squad was headed to the scene, and authorities were prepared to order another closure if necessary, Martin said.

Traffic was initially backed up for more than a mile in both directions, but it was moving normally by 9:45 a.m., Martin said.
