More and more women on TV

September 09, 2008|From a Times staff writer

The percentage of female characters on the broadcast networks' prime-time television series was at a record-high 43% during the 2006-07 season, up 1% from a year earlier, according to a report being released today by the Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film at San Diego State University.

The report also found that the percentage of women working on those shows as creators, executive producers, producers, directors, writers, editors and directors of photography remained the same as the preceding season, at 26%.

Martha M. Lauzen, executive director of the center, compiled the figures by examining the characters and production team of one randomly selected episode of every prime-time drama, comedy and reality program that aired during the season on ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, CW and MyNetworkTV.
