Ducks open rookie camp

DUCKS

There are expected to be 20 newcomers, including six of seven selected in the first three rounds of the draft.

When the Ducks lost promising young forward Dustin Penner to the Edmonton Oilers last summer, the only bright side seemed to be the draft picks they received as compensation.

The Ducks have since parlayed those into a stockpile of new players, who will make their debut Friday afternoon at the Honda Center. The first day of rookie camp is expected to draw 20 newcomers in all, including six of the seven who were selected during the first three rounds of the entry-level draft in June.

In addition to their own picks, the Ducks received first, second- and third-round selections from the Oilers as compensation for losing Penner. The Ducks weren't able to match Edmonton's offer sheet because of salary-cap restrictions, drawing criticism from Ducks General Manager Brian Burke and other front-office executives, who felt the Oilers skewed the market by overpaying for Penner.

The Oilers played poorly through the first three-quarters of last season, giving hope that their first pick would land Anaheim in the lottery. They rallied to win 14 of their final 20 games, however, and leapfrogged several teams in the overall standings.

As a result, Edmonton's first pick went to the Ducks at No. 12 overall. On draft day, Burke swapped that pick with the Kings for two in the latter half of the opening round. The Ducks then chose defenseman Jake Gardiner at No. 17. Gardiner, the only high school player selected in the first round, won't attend the rookie camp because he is already enrolled at Wisconsin, where he's expected to spend two years before turning professional.

The Ducks then traded their other first-round pick, No. 28 overall, to the Phoenix Coyotes for two early second-round selections, No. 35 and No. 39 overall. Those picks netted centers Nicolas Deschamps and Eric O'Dell.

Friday's session begins at 2 p.m. and is open to the public. Saturday's session is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m., also at Honda Center.
