These days, L.A. pop-up shops are sprouting like reality-star clothing lines. Most are a perfect fit for their elfin life span. But every so often, a fleeting gem leaves shoppers longing for a permanently signed lease.
Little Black Dress could be one of those classics. On Tuesday, it opens temporary L.A. digs filled with exclusive products, plush services and -- after 7 p.m. -- free booze.
Everything -- and we do mean everything -- inside the 6,100-square-foot space is for sale. Be the first in the States to score handcrafted lace lingerie by London designer Debbie Gething, or go for deeper luxe: the modern, $14,000 bed on which the line is displayed. A set of simple Italian linens from Jill Sanford Burrows' debut collection ($570 to $630) is this store's idea of basic bedding.
Young Hollywood-inspired pop art paintings by L.A. artists Biagio Black and Louis Carreon, part of a rotating in-store exhibit, are part of the for-sale decor, and there are smaller splurges, say DayNa Decker's lychee, freesia and raspberry candle created especially for the shop ($84).
Of course, there's fashion too. Find looks from a bevy of L.A.-based labels including Lauren Moshi, former "Project Runway" champ Jeffrey Sebelia and current season castoff Emily Brandle.
A concierge service, weekly fashion film festival and Saturday afternoon clothing design classes for kids go beyond the call of retail duty. And 20% of every sale goes to local charities including the Saban Free Clinic and the L.A. chapter of Dress for Success, which provides career clothing to low-income women.
With luck, Little Black Dress will hang around a little longer than planned.
