Alex Stepheson could hear about eligibility for USC basketball team within two to three weeks

USC BASKETBALL

Transfer from North Carolina is awaiting word from the NCAA on his status for next season.

While much of the attention around USC basketball has focused on the future -- recruits such as Renardo Sidney of Fairfax High, Jordan Hamilton of Compton Dominguez and Tyler Honeycutt of Sylmar visited the campus last weekend -- a more pressing matter could be decided much sooner.

Alex Stepheson, who recently transferred from North Carolina, could hear from the NCAA about his eligibility for the coming season within two or three weeks.

The forward faces sitting out a season but is trying to obtain a waiver because his father suffers from an undisclosed illness that prompted Stepheson's move to be closer to the family's Southern California home.

Stepheson averaged 4.3 points and 4.5 rebounds last season for the Tar Heels, who advanced to the Final Four before losing to Kansas. He shot 53.9% from the field and averaged 14.5 minutes per game.
