Long Beach Cabrillo adds two transfers to boys' basketball team

HIGH SCHOOL NOTEBOOK

Ervin Ware, a junior guard who started at Cerritos Gahr last season, and Keith Shamburger, a junior guard who was the Division V player of the year at La Verne Lutheran, enroll in school.

Long Beach Cabrillo has become the latest recipient of a player switching schools in boys' basketball.

On Monday, Ervin Ware, a junior guard who started last season at Cerritos Gahr, enrolled at Cabrillo.

He joins another recent arrival at Cabrillo, junior guard Keith Shamburger, who was the Division V player of the year at La Verne Lutheran.

Both have ties to the California Supreme club program, and that has attracted the attention of Southern Section officials.

"We're concerned that there is a connection to a sports program that could be possibly placing these kids, but we have no evidence," Southern Section spokesman Thom Simmons said.

Cabrillo has a new coach, Jim Nielsen, who previously coached at Calabasas High, Pepperdine and Redondo Union.

School officials must confirm that Ware moved, which would make him eligible immediately. Shamburger is expected to seek a hardship waiver.

Seeking eligibility

Greg Hamilton, the father of Compton Dominguez basketball standout Jordan Hamilton, said Tuesday he was in the process of seeking a hardship waiver from the Southern Section that would grant a fifth year of athletic eligibility for his son.

The Southern Section has not received paperwork from Hamilton, section spokesman Simmons said.

Hamilton was expected to sign a letter of intent in November. He is considering Texas, USC, Connecticut, Syracuse and California.

Seeking a home

The City Section is looking into possible sites for the Dec. 12 City Invitational final in football. L.A. Southwest College, Birmingham and Palisades are under consideration to host the game, which has been moved from the Coliseum because of budget cutbacks.

The City Championship Division football final will be held at the Coliseum on Saturday, Dec. 13 at 1 p.m.

Boron player still critical

Boron High Principal Paul Kostopoulos said the condition of gravely injured football player Vinnie Rodriguez remained unchanged as of Tuesday afternoon.

Rodriguez was in critical condition after suffering seizures as the result of a head injury Friday during the Bobcats' game against Riverside California School for the Deaf.

Boron is holding a $6-a-plate spaghetti dinner fundraiser in the school cafeteria from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday to raise funds for Rodriguez's grandmother, who is the guardian of the Boron player and his three younger brothers.
