FAIRFIELD, CALIF. — A day after a jury convicted Fairfield City Councilman Frank Kardos of felony assault against an ex-girlfriend, authorities said Saturday that he had apparently killed himself.
The Fairfield police and fire departments received a call Saturday morning and found the 54-year-old Kardos inside his home. The councilman was later pronounced dead at NorthBay Medical Center.
The city was not releasing further details about Kardos' death, said spokeswoman Morgana Yahnke.
Kardos is the second councilman from the city to die this month.
The community is still reeling from the slaying earlier this month of 22-year-old City Councilman Matt Garcia.
On Saturday, U.S. marshals and Las Vegas police arrested Henry Don Williams in Las Vegas on a murder warrant in connection with Garcia's slaying. Police said they believed Williams and another man, Gene Allen Combs, had intended to collect a drug debt.
There was no evidence that Garcia was involved in drug activity, police said.
Kardos was convicted Friday in Solano County Superior Court of felony assault and misdemeanor domestic violence resulting from a 2007 attack on an ex-girlfriend.
He faced a sentence of three years and six months in prison, and had planned to appeal.
