Blast injures 10 in Basque region

September 22, 2008|From Times Wire Reports

A car bomb exploded outside a police station in Spain's northern Basque region, causing major damage and injuring 10 people, hours after an explosion in the regional capital, officials said.

Police blamed the armed separatist group ETA, which has been fighting since 1968 for an independent Basque state in northern Spain and western France.

The first car bomb exploded next to a bank's headquarters in Vitoria, a regional Interior Ministry official said. No injuries were reported.

The police station bombing in the port town of Ondarroa injured three officers and seven civilians, another official said.
