These two are keepers

COMMENTARY

September 28, 2008|Ross Newhan, Special to The Times

"They've reduced some of that skepticism, but they probably have much more to gain by signing a player of Manny's stature than the Angels have to lose if they failed to sign Teixeira. People trust Moreno. He has built a reputation for winning and operating a first- class franchise. He has been aggressive in going after players who can take them deep into the playoffs because he knows it comes back to him in franchise value."

The tricky part of all this is the timing.

Do they both go after CC Sabathia, the top pitcher in the free-agent market, while Ramirez and Teixeira are deciding? Do the Angels try to keep Frankie Rodriguez on a string or have they already decided to make Jose Arredondo the closer and invest in Teixeira and a starting pitcher? How do the Dodgers fill other holes with $50 million or more expected to clear from the roster with Jeff Kent retiring, Derek Lowe and Casey Blake both possibly leaving as free agents, Nomar Garciaparra possibly giving in to his injuries, Brad Penny facing a buyout and Rafael Furcal's contract up?

Questions, questions, but one has a definite answer.

Re-sign Ramirez and Teixeira?

Yes, indisputably.
