Jon Lovitz

August 02, 2009|Liesl Bradner

Jon Lovitz likes to do things his own way. Most aspiring comedians start off making the rounds of the stand-up circuit, then eventually work their way into films and TV. Instead the Tarzana native broke onto the scene as a cast member of "Saturday Night Live" in 1985, then parlayed his fame into TV and film roles in "A League of Their Own," "The Wedding Singer," "The Critic" and "NewsRadio."

He started doing stand-up five years ago and in May opened the 400-seat, island-themed Jon Lovitz Comedy Club at Universal CityWalk, adorned with 14 paintings donated by marine life artist Robert Wyland. The comedian, who attended Harvard and studied theater at UC Irvine, has also appeared on Broadway in "The Dinner Party" and has sung several times at Carnegie Hall.

He recently shared his favorites in pop culture.

HEAVY ROTATION ON YOUR IPOD: The Beatles, George Gershwin, the Beach Boys, Frank Sinatra, Sheryl Crow's "Hole in My Pocket" and "Steve McQueen," and some songs I wrote.

SOUNDTRACK FOR YOUR COMMUTE: I listen to XM/Sirius radio. Lately it's been CNN, comedy channels like Laugh USA, Jamie Foxx's "The Foxxhole," "Raw Dog" or radio classics like the Jack Benny show.

IN YOUR NETFLIX QUEUE: I either go to the movies or buy DVDs. I just saw "Transformers" and "The Hangover." "The Big Sleep" is one of my favorite DVDs.

TIVO: Conan O'Brien's first "Tonight Show." I've known him since he was a writer on "SNL." And Wimbledon. I was happy for Roger Federer but did feel bad for Andy Roddick.

TOP INTERNET DESTINATION: Yahoo.com -- for everything.

YOUTUBE PICKS: There's all these videos of this 16-year-old baseball phenom, Bryce Harper, he's 6-feet-2 and can throw 96 miles per hour. And funny cats -- talking cats -- any kind of cat.

GUILTY PLEASURE: My friends' artwork and music. I really like Damian Elwes (Cary's brother), Robert Wyland and Stephen Wright. Their art is very accessible -- not a lot of analyzing.
