A man wielding two meat cleavers and shouting at authorities to kill him outside his Rosemead apartment was shot to death by Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies after he advanced on them, authorities said Sunday.

The man had allegedly slipped into a neighbor's apartment in the 9200 block of Ramona Boulevard Saturday evening while she was getting things from her car. He emerged from a bedroom when she returned, a Sheriff's Department news release said.

The woman recognized the man from an upstairs unit. She screamed, pushed him and ran out before calling police about 6 p.m., authorities said.

Deputies went to the man's apartment. After first refusing to open the door, he then did so with a cleaver in each hand and moved toward them, yelling at them to "kill him," according to the release. The department said the deputies withdrew, but the man advanced toward them. Two deputies each fired one round at him. He was taken to a hospital, where he died.
