Costly clunkers

August 06, 2009

Re "Driven by clunkers," Out Here, Aug. 4

Karen Klein bought her Mercedes clunker three years ago for $3,000. Since then, the car's value deteriorated to $500, and she managed to get a $4,500 rebate from the federal government as a trade-in on a Korean car. She received this windfall regardless of need.

This means that the government just paid her nine times the value of the car, not counting all the federal paperwork and bureaucracy needed to complete the transaction.

Now it wants to triple the cost of the program from $1 billion to $3 billion.

And the government will cut the cost of healthcare by making sure people get the red pill, not the blue pill. Or was it the blue pill, not the red pill?
