Quiksilver designs swimwear for Standard

August 07, 2009|Alexandra Le Tellier

For those who find themselves tempted by the rooftop pool at the Standard downtown but arrived sans swimsuit, Quiksilver has designed an exclusive line of swimwear for all Standard Hotel locations, to be sold from poolside vending machines. Each Standard will have a signature style, starting with the downtown location -- 550 S. Flower St. -- which is hosting a party from 1 to 8 p.m. Saturday. Board shorts cost $75, and bikinis go for $84. Thankfully, the touch-screen vending machine takes plastic.

Future vision of Mercantile wine bar

Will George Abou-Daoud continue on his winning streak of creating Hollywood's most inviting taverns? With the Bowery, Mission Cantina and Delancey under his belt, the NYC transplant is poised to strike again with Mercantile, slated to open at 6600 Sunset Blvd. in early September. And this time he's bringing along critically acclaimed chef Kris Morningstar. "It's equal parts gourmet marketplace, daytime cafe and nighttime wine bar," says Abou-Daoud, who describes the space as having an "urban-country, old-world feel with original brick walls, raw wood accents and a carbon steel-topped bar." Food: Classic sandwiches and salads with an "artisanal spin." Wine: Global selection, with glasses starting at $7. Abou-Daoud and Morningstar are opening restaurant District next door too, and they say to expect seasonal bistro fare and creative cocktails.

New bar: Angel's

Remember Holly's West? The owners of Zanzibar, Little Temple and Townhouse Cocktails have swooped in and revamped the Santa Monica bar, at 2460 Wilshire Blvd., into a piano bar and supper club called Angel's. Design: 1930s- and 1940s-inspired. Cocktails: "Vintage," complete with absinthe decanter. Food: Bar food, fried. Music: Tunes from the 1930s through the 1950s and live piano Thursdays through Saturdays.

Yappy Hour

at City Sip

City Sip has hooked up with its neighbor, K9 | Loft, to host a happy hour that includes playtime for your pup. Here's the deal: For $22, K9 will provide doggy day care while you enjoy a glass of wine and some cheese at City Sip, at 2150 W. Sunset Blvd. Yappy Hour goes down from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays.
