Officials: 9 sick from Calif. beef problem

August 08, 2009|Associated Press

Health officials in California and Colorado say at least nine people have reported illnesses tied to recalled ground beef that may be tainted with salmonella.

On Thursday, Fresno-based Beef Packers Inc. recalled 825,769 pounds of ground beef produced June 5-23.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service said the beef was shipped to retail distribution centers in Arizona, California, Colorado and Utah.

The California Department of Public Health said Friday that three people in Orange County and two in Tulare County reported feeling ill. Colorado health officials say at least four people there were hospitalized for related illnesses. All are recovering.

A separate recall last month involved beef tied to the hospitalization of 12 people in a possible E. coli outbreak. That meat was produced in Colorado.
