August 08, 2009|Times Wire Reports

A battle between police and gunmen has left 12 people dead in the central Mexico city of Pachuca, officials said.

The dead comprise three police officers and nine gunmen, said Hidalgo state Atty. Gen. Jose Alberto Rodriguez. Two state police officers and one city officer remained hospitalized after suffering gunshot wounds Thursday.

The Hidalgo state police director, Donanciano Millan, said officers acting on a tip stopped four trucks carrying the gunmen, who opened fire.
