Law needed on bogus phone fees

August 16, 2009

Re: "Bogus fees too easy to ring up," Aug. 12:

Just as you describe in your article, a third-party vendor erroneously charged me for a voice-mail service that I never ordered. They were charging me $14.95 for around five months until I realized it.

I called AT&T and was told it couldn't do anything about it because a third-party company was responsible. After about four to five months of wrangling with both companies, I finally got the third-party company to write me a check for the bogus charges.

It took a lot of time and effort, and I found it ridiculous that AT&T said it wasn't responsible when it was an AT&T bill I was paying. The law needs to be changed. I'm sure this has happened to a lot of other people who just give up because it's such a hassle. To me, this is just plain thievery.
