3 dog genes for countless coats

August 29, 2009|From Times Staff And Wire Reports

From short to shaggy, nearly all of the differences in dogs' coat types result from variations in just three genes.

Researchers studied variations in the DNA of more than 1,000 dogs from 80 breeds, then compared the results to descriptions of various coats.

The study, published Thursday in the online edition of Science, found that nearly all of the varieties of dog coats could be accounted for by combinations of genes called RSPO2, FGF5 and KRT71.
