Reporting from Kabul — U.S. Marines and Afghan security forces assaulting a Taliban stronghold in the Now Zad valley of Helmand province have uncovered large caches of explosives, rifles, machine guns and material used to make roadside bombs, the Marines announced today.
Resistance has been sporadic in the once-thriving community that is now virtually abandoned except for the Taliban. There were no reports of Marine or Afghan casualties, the Marines said.
