Women's rights activist is held

February 02, 2009|TIMES WIRE REPORTS

A lawyer for an Iranian activist says police detained the woman while she was campaigning for equal rights for women in marriage, divorce and inheritance.

The lawyer says Nafiseh Azad was detained Friday while collecting signatures.

Attorney Nasrin Sotoudeh said collecting signatures is not illegal. Over the last three years, however, Iran has detained many women seeking equal rights.
