Civilians killed by African troops

February 03, 2009|Times Wire Reports

African Union peacekeepers opened fire on civilian vehicles in Mogadishu, killing 18 people, after an AU vehicle hit a land mine, officials and a witness said.

AU spokesman Bahoku Barigye said the Ugandan contingent was responding to gunfire and that he did not know whom the troops hit. He said one soldier was wounded.

"We did not intentionally kill civilians," Barigye said.
