The Italian job

February 07, 2009

David Beckham "temporarily" leaving the Galaxy to play for AC Milan is the equivalent of having a "trial separation" from a very average girlfriend and then meeting an absolute bombshell. Why would he come back? The Galaxy is an average team in a very average league. Beckham still has some considerable talent left. Why would he waste it sending gorgeous cross passes to guys who can't finish? We need to get over the arrogant idea that Major League Soccer is someday going to be as competitive as the European leagues.

I couldn't care less about David Beckham, but as a Kings fan I knew his time with the Galaxy was ending when Tim Leiweke recently vowed he would return. Shortly after AEG bought the Kings, Leiweke similarly gave his word to my fellow season-seat holders they would spare no expense to bring the Stanley Cup to L.A. How is that working out for all of us, Timmy?
