Black Cat Bar Celebration Before Proposition 8, before "don't ask, don't tell," before the Stonewall riots and the modern gay rights movement, Silver Lake saw the largest gay rights protest in the U.S. On New Year's Eve 1967, police officers raided the Black Cat Bar and arrested 14 men. Two months later, 300 to 600 people marched in front of the bar. To commemorate its recent designation as a LGBT-related Historic Cultural Monument, City Council President Eric Garcetti, author Mark Thompson and community activists honor the Black Cat Bar -- now known as Le Barcito -- with a presentation followed by a "cake and kiss."
