Condo makeover is colorful in Santa Monica

With a little expert guidance and some bargain finds, Joan Currie transforms her home into a lively, personality-driven space.

Wanting a break from the predictable rhythms of her job at a grocery store, Joan Currie longed for a home that was vibrant, colorful, inexpensive and a little chaotic. With the help of a friend who's a designer and builder, Currie got her wish. Using postcards, fabric swatches and tear sheets collected from shelter magazines over the years, she now has a 640-square-foot condominium in Santa Monica that rebels against textbook decorating.

Most important during these tough economic times? "It makes people happy," she says.
