Bus rider grabs steering wheel

February 15, 2009|ASSOCIATED PRESS

A tour bus passenger was arrested after he grabbed the wheel and steered into a freeway divider before other passengers tackled him, authorities said.

The 25-year-old man was taken into custody about 9 p.m. Friday in the Del Mar area.

The bus was on Interstate 5, heading from Tijuana to Los Angeles, when the man told the driver he wanted to get off and grabbed the wheel, California Highway Patrol Sgt. Terry Brollini said.

The bus scraped the center divider before the driver managed to brake.

About 45 people were on the bus, Brollini said, adding that three tackled the disruptive man and held him until CHP officers arrived.

No one was injured, and the bus continued its route after a 45-minute delay.
