Chilean volcano roars back to life

February 21, 2009|Times Staff and Wire Reports

More than 150 people who had returned to a Chilean town destroyed by a volcanic eruption last year were evacuated again Thursday as the volcano roared back to life, spewing ash high into the air.

Experts who flew over the volcano reported a "large emanation of gas" and said the situation was risky for the seaside town of Chaiten, which shares the volcano's name, because rains could trigger avalanches. "The experts were unanimous in considering that no one must remain in Chaiten," Chile's Emergency Bureau said.
