Hits And Misses

February 22, 2009|Chuck Culpepper

Hit: What would you call being Mark Calcavecchia and starting a 64 at Riviera on the revered No. 10 with a high tee shot to just off the front edge of the green, then a putt true enough that it blasts through the grass and trickles 35 feet into the cup for only the second eagle on the hole of the tournament? Bliss.

Miss(es): In an unspeakable calamity beside the No. 8 green, Tommy Armour III's chip from 54 feet stopped up the slope and rolled back down toward him to 56 feet, whereupon his next chip rolled back down toward him to 53 feet, whereupon his next chip rolled back down to 58 feet, whereupon his next chip rolled back down to his left to 52 feet, whereupon he chipped on, sank a 22-footer for quadruple-bogey eight and slammed his club into the greenside because that club really, really deserved it.
