Re "Nation, our yard needs work," Column One, Jan. 8

Yes, the National Mall is crumbling, California schools may have to be shut down from time to time -- and still, our governments grow and grow like Alice.

This "wonderland" will continue on its way to oblivion until we -- all of us -- assume personal responsibility for our actions and stop depending on an expanded and incapable collective body of government to do it for us.
