Inquiry halted in reporter's death

July 01, 2009|TIMES WIRE REPORTS

Russian detectives have halted an investigation into the slaying of a U.S. reporter, defying calls from Washington for his killers to be brought to justice, according to a legal document.

The 2004 death of Paul Klebnikov, editor of the Russian edition of Forbes magazine, drew widespread condemnation and underlined the dangers faced by reporters in Russia. But his killers remain on the loose after two men accused of the slaying were acquitted by a jury at a 2006 trial.

The chief detective on the case said in a letter to lawyers representing Klebnikov's family that the investigation had been halted.
