Report on CIA tactics is delayed

July 03, 2009|TIMES WIRE REPORTS

The Obama administration said it needed two more months to review an internal CIA report on the agency's secret detention and interrogation program before making it public.

The Justice Department had originally said it intended to release the report in June as part of a lawsuit by the American Civil Liberties Union, but officials now say they need until the end of next month.

The report by the CIA's inspector general questioned the effectiveness of the agency's harsh interrogation methods during the Bush administration -- methods such as waterboarding, which simulates drowning.
