When I see cars driving by it makes me happy and calms me. I hear the beep-beep of traffic and smell their gasoline. All I want is to taste the pie from the store.

Golden Light
Cameron, 9
St. Margaret's Episcopal School
San Juan Capistrano
The yellow clock in the sky shimmers as the grass sways to the blue jay's soft silver song. The air is creamy with white cotton clouds, and I taste warm golden light.

Salt and Freedom
Sydney, 9
Oak Creek Elementary
Irvine
The sun swirls like a giant yellow ball of fire as we laugh all the way down the block. The air is tinged with the scent of summer. Fire and barbecue smoke. Salt and freedom. The smooth sand crunches beneath our feet as I taste the warm breeze.

You Know Me . . .
Maya, 9
Webster Elementary
Malibu
You know me and I know you, the same way a sock knows a shoe. We fit together, we morph into one. Alone we are nothing. Together we're fun. Like a single thread in the middle of cloth, instead of a flock -- just a lone little moth. If you're alone, you're dreadful and lonely. You think to yourself, friends, if only, if only . . .

Oh! To Be . . .
Joey, 9
Coeur d'Alene Elementary
Venice
Oh! To be the moon -- Drinking coffee all night to stay up late. Playing cards with the constellations up in the day when it drinks too much. Oh! To be the sun saying "Hi" to the moon before it starts its shift, lighting the sky as it wakes up, sleeping at night. Oh! To be a cloud showing off to the sun, exploding rain from the sky, moistening the earth -- Shooting lightning when it's mad.
