A toilet breaks on space station

July 20, 2009|Times Wire Reports

One of two toilets aboard the International Space Station broke down when a pump separator apparently flooded. Astronauts worked for hours to fix it until Mission Control in Cape Canaveral advised them to take a break and try again today.

In the meantime, the six space station residents had to get in line to use their one good toilet. And the shuttle Endeavour's seven astronauts were restricted to the shuttle bathroom. There have never been so many people -- 13 -- together in space.

Specialists convened in Moscow and Houston to discuss the problem. The multimillion-dollar toilet was built in Russia.
