I Am

I Am
Guillermo, 11
Charnock Road Elementary
Los Angeles
I am a good student. I help my sister with her homework. I am an eagle. I am Friday, because that's the day I go with my family to eat. I am rain because I have dark skin. I am the color black because everything I wear is black, I am the cool breeze from the desert. I am metal because I am strong. I hope for no war.
In ten years, I will go to college and study law. I am healthy. I am history. I am home.

Leaves
Stella, 8
Los Feliz Charter School for the Arts
Los Angeles
Leaves are like a snake. They slither down a tree. They lie on the sidewalk as quiet as can be.

A Sea of Sand
Isaac, 12
St. Margaret's Episcopal School
San Juan Capistrano
A sea of sand whips in the blistering breeze as the endless sound of nothing echoes in my ears. I claw the stinging sand, tasting the loneliness of the desert as the scent of sun burns in my nostrils.

Beyond the Horizon
Madison, 11
Meadows Elementary
Valencia
Beyond the horizon, there lay a wonder. Is there rain, sleet, snow, or thunder? There could be a land of sadness, made with debris. Or maybe there is this: A world made of only bliss. Maybe the horizon goes forever. There are only dreams on what is beyond the horizon. I, myself, cannot go. Oh, if only, if only I knew what was beyond the horizon.

Carnival of Stars
Grant, 10
Magic Pen Kids
Santa Ana
Planets whirl like giant pinwheels in the blackness of outer space creating a carnival for aliens to gawk at. "Achoo!" The moon sneezes and all the stars scatter into constellations, so that all I hear is the sizzling of the sun.
