Idolatry of Lakers is ludicrous

TODAY'S LAST word comes in e-mail from Ed Gomez: "It has been really difficult for me to read your column lately. I'm sure a lot of people tell you that, but not for the same reason. Your column was a common love between my father-in-law, Robert H. Ponce, and me. [Sometimes he laughed a little too hard at the Grocery Store Bagger comments]. I still read your column, but since my father-in-law passed away on April 15, 2009, it has not been the same. He was the consummate L.A. sports fan. Sports is not the only common love we shared. We both love his beautiful daughter, Diana, and his three magnificent grandchildren: Carlos, Gabriela and Marcos. With Father's Day upon us, I wanted to wish a happy Father's Day to one of the greatest ever. May Robert H. Ponce serve as a reminder to fathers and grandfathers everywhere that our children crave our presence more than any of the other presents we can buy."

Just in case, I'll be bringing doughnuts when I visit the 7-Eleven Kid in Arizona.
