'The Surprise Father's Day'

June 21, 2009|Kay Haugaard

She ran into her room feeling terrible. Her nose felt prickly and she could feel tears coming. She sniffed and rubbed her eyes. But what good would it do to cry? She wanted her Daddy to know that she loved him. So she looked around her room. But what could she give him to show him that? She couldn't give her dad a Barbie doll or a stuffed dinosaur or bangley bracelets. But then suddenly she knew what to do. She only needed a marking pen and a piece of pretty paper. She found a pen that could make fine little letters and a piece of green tissue paper. She stuck it together with a piece of tape and ran out of her room to take it to him. Her dad looked at it curiously and opened it carefully. There was a stone that was flat on both sides.

"Happy Father's Day!" she said.

Her dad looked puzzled for only a second, but it was enough to make Liana's heart sink. He doesn't like it, she thought.

But suddenly a big smile spread across his face and he read out loud: "My Best Skipping Rock." She felt so happy. He liked it! He liked it a lot! "Thank you, Liana," he said and gave her a kiss and a big hug. "Print your name on the other side with the date for me." Then he hugged her and Kelsi together and said, "What a Happy Father's Day."
