Homeland Security Department spokeswoman Amy Kudwa said less than two hours after the crash that federal authorities had no indication of any terrorism connection.
"I don't know the reason for this accident," Metro's Catoe said. "I would still say the system is safe, but we've had an incident."

Other train disasters
Recent deadly commuter train crashes in the United States, including three in California:
Sept. 12, 2008: A Metrolink commuter train fails to stop at a red light near Chatsworth and collides with an oncoming freight train. The crash kills 25 people and injures 135. Investigators say the train's engineer had been texting while on duty.
May 28, 2008: A commuter train crashes into another train in Newton, Mass. The commuter train operator is killed, and about a dozen passengers are injured.
Jan. 26, 2005: A pair of crowded commuter trains smashes into each other in Glendale when a suicidal man drives an SUV onto the tracks. One train strikes it and derails into the other. Ten people die, and more than 180 are injured.
Jan. 6, 2003: A Metrolink train carrying morning commuters smashes into a truck in Burbank and derails, killing two, including the motorist, and injuring 33 passengers.
Feb. 16, 1996: An Amtrak train and a commuter train collide in Silver Spring, Md., killing 11 people.
