Let rich shoulder more tax burden

March 08, 2009

Re: Michael Hiltzik's column, "Shifting tax burden redefines 'class war,' " March 4:

Hiltzik quite rightly defended what has been demonized by the wealthy as a "redistribution of wealth."

When we have a country where the top 1% of the population owns more than 90% of our country's wealth, there is most definitely something wrong. In a country where the rich have 21 times as much as the middle class, it can be said that there is more economic inequity here than in any other non-Third World country.

With our middle class shrinking, our lower economic class growing and our wealth controlled by an elite and greedy minority, there is absolutely nothing wrong with taxing the wealthy and easing the burden on the unwealthy.
