Obama base to press for budget

March 16, 2009|TIMES WIRE REPORTS

President Obama will kick off an all-out grass-roots effort today urging Congress to pass his $3.55-trillion budget, activating the extensive campaign apparatus he built during his 2008 candidacy.

The campaign, under the aegis of the Democratic National Committee, will rely on the 13-million-strong e-mail list put together during the campaign and now under the control of Organizing for America, a group overseen by the DNC.

David Plouffe, who was Obama's campaign manager and is now an advisor to Organizing for America, called this the group's "first major engagement" in the legislative process. Volunteers will be asked to urge neighbors to sign a pledge in support of Obama's budget.
