SMART LIST

Demetri Martin, Jesse Eisenberg, 'In Treatment,' Kari Hilson, 'Hunger'

March 22, 2009|Denise Martin

There's no shame talking about: "Important Things With Demetri Martin"

Martin is a Yale grad and former writer for "Late Night With Conan O'Brien," so it's no surprise his Comedy Central show is nerd humor at its finest. Catch the season finale and join me in awaiting its renewal. (Wednesday)

Get ready to talk about: Jesse Eisenberg

The 23-year-old actor made a lasting impression as a pompous teen with combative parents in Noah Baumbach's Oscar-nominated film "The Squid and the Whale," so we're eager to take in two of his latest back to back. The coming-of-age thriller "The Education of Charlie Banks" opens this week -- don't let director Fred Durst steer you away; the film won over scoffers at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2007 -- followed by "Adventureland," an '80s comedy set in a dilapidated theme park from "Superbad" director Greg Mottola, the week after. It's time you talked about: "In Treatment"

The HBO drama follows the ongoing psychotherapy sessions of Dr. Paul Weston (Gabriel Byrne) and four of his clients with particularly knotty problems as well as Paul's meetings with his own therapist, Gina (Dianne Wiest). The Season 1 box set comes in handy because, like therapy itself, the show -- which resumes next month -- is heavy and highly addictive. (Tuesday)

Feel free to talk up: Kari Hilson

You're already familiar with Hilson as hitmaker: She's written tracks for Britney Spears, Ciara, Ludacris, Mary J. Blige, Pussycat Dolls, Timbaland and Usher, among others. Now she's front and center on a solo disc, "In a Perfect World," which includes the next girl power club anthem, "Get Your Money Up." (Tuesday)

Brace yourself to talk about: "Hunger"

The award-winning art-house film, the first from British visual artist-director Steve McQueen, is an unflinching look inside Belfast's Maze Prison and its infamous H-Block at the time of the IRA's 1981 hunger strike. Best to skip the popcorn for this one. (Friday)
