Investigators raid ACORN offices

November 07, 2009|Times Wire Reports

State investigators have raided ACORN offices in New Orleans, taking away computer hard drives and documents as part of a probe into alleged embezzlement and tax fraud when the organization's national headquarters was based in the city.

"This is an investigation of everything -- ACORN, the national organization, the local organization and all of its affiliated entities, specifically as it relates to any potential violations of Louisiana law," Assistant Atty. Gen. David Caldwell said.

ACORN attorney Pamela Marple said the group was cooperating.

State prosecutors said their probe into the New Orleans offices of the Assn. of Community Organizations for Reform Now stemmed from allegations made last year by board members involving embezzlement nearly a decade ago.

ACORN is now based in Washington, D.C.
