WORLD BRIEFING / AFGHANISTAN : Bomber strikes outside U.S. base

November 14, 2009|Times Staff and Wire Reports

The Taliban claimed responsibility for a suicide car bombing outside a major U.S. military base on the outskirts of Kabul that injured at least two dozen people, including nine Western troops.

The attack came on a busy road that connects Kabul with the eastern city of Jalalabad and is used by military vehicles and civilian cars alike.

NATO reported that none of its troops was killed and that those hurt included nine military personnel and 10 civilian contractors. After a series of conflicting casualty numbers -- including an erroneous report of two fatalities -- Afghan authorities said five civilians were injured.
