Another way: Amended passport

November 15, 2009

I was surprised to read Catharine Hamm's advice ["Me, Myself and ID," On the Spot, Nov. 8] informing J.A. Leicester to apply for a new passport without offering another alternative: an amendment to the passport until it expires. See travel .state.gov/passport/forms /ds5504/ds5504_2663.html.

If done within a year of the name change, the amendment is free without expedited service. This would save much more money than getting a new passport and can be done overseas at any U.S. consulate, usually on the same day.

I have used my passport with my maiden name for the last five years and have not had any issues traveling overseas with an amended passport and travel documents in my new name.
