LETTERS : A path to peace in the Mideast

November 16, 2009

Re "Doubts about Palestinian vote," Nov. 13

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas' decision not to run for reelection, combined with possible postponement of the planned Jan. 24 election itself, should make the Israelis and Americans realize that the policy of attempting to isolate Hamas, while refusing to make any concessions to Abbas and the Palestinian Authority, is not bringing the region closer to peace.

If the Israelis want peace, and if the United States wants a resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, they should accept Hamas as the elected leaders of Gaza, freeze settlement expansion and open the Gaza border crossings. Otherwise they are condemning the Israeli people to continued tensions and the Palestinian people to far worse.
