John Cleese, 'Withnail and I,' Charlie Haden

November 17, 2009

An Evening With John Cleese The "Monty Python" alumnus discusses his hilarious life and career. The Academy Award nominee shares the humorous sides of his many problems and dilemmas, including his latest plan for world peace. Carpenter Performing Arts Center, 6200 Atherton St., Long Beach. 8 p.m. $50. (562) 985-7000.

"Withnail and I" With the 1986 British cult classic "Withnail and I" screening at Cinefamily and Werner Herzog's new "Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans" opening this Friday, the theaters will be flush with odes to bad living. Bruce Robinson's "Withnail and I" is required viewing for those who find hilarity at the bottom of a bottle. With Richard E. Grant turning in a rip-roaring performance as the feisty Withnail, the debauchery here is treated much more wryly than in Abel Ferrara's original "Bad Lieutenant" or Herzog's remake. The screening will be followed by an interview with Robinson. Cinefamily, 611 N. Fairfax Ave., L.A. 8 p.m. $12. (323) 655-2510.

Charlie Haden The jazz bassist takes a deep drink from his personal history in bluegrass and mountain music at this sprawling showcase. Notably in tow are his sisters Tanya, Rachel and Petra, who should be familiar to L.A. arty music circles. Walt Disney Concert Hall, 111 S. Grand Ave., L.A. 8 p.m. $44.50 to $99.75. (323) 850-2000.
