Meaty memories of a visit to Spain

October 04, 2009

Jennifer Olvera's story on Zaragoza ["They Really Love Their Ham," Sept. 27] brought back memories of Jamon serrano, chorizos, croquetas, Charcuterias.

When I was just a kid, I spent a month in a village called Campo in the mountains of Huesca, Spain. All the farmers and ranchers lived in stone houses. The main floor was sort of a basement, while the family lived in the floors upstairs. And, what do you think they kept hanging in those basements? Yep, hams and sausages. It must be a tradition -- pigs outside, hams and sausages downstairs and everyone happy upstairs.
