7 killed, 20 hurt in bar attack

October 19, 2009|Times Wire Reports

Gunmen opened fire on a crowd celebrating the reopening of a newly renovated neighborhood bar and grocery, killing at least seven and injuring 20, police said.

Dozens of people had crammed into the tiny La Tombola bar in Toa Baja, a municipality just west of San Juan, when the assailants attacked, police said.

Justice Department prosecutor Wanda Vazquez said the scope of the killing made investigators think the attack might have involved a feud between drug traffickers.

Gov. Luis Fortuno called the attack a "senseless act." At a news conference, he said: "To those responsible for these actions, we are going to follow you, find you and charge you."

The killings happened weeks after authorities made several high-profile arrests of suspected drug dealers.
