Bar owner held on drug charges

October 28, 2009|Times Wire Reports

The owner of a bar and grocery where seven people were shot to death was arrested and charged with drug trafficking, authorities said.

The shootout apparently stemmed from a dispute over drugs between the owner of La Tombola, Wilfredo Semprit Santana, and another person, said Police Lt. Rafael Rosa.

Semprit, who was among 20 people wounded in the Oct. 17 violence, was indicted on a federal charge of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute substances containing heroin, cocaine, crack and marijuana, U.S. Atty. Rosa Emilia Rodriguez said.

Police say at least two men barged into the bar in Toa Baja, near San Juan, and opened fire.
