A plea to finally give guinea pigs their due

October 31, 2009

Thank you for the excellent article on guinea pig groups ["The New Face of Animal Rescue," Oct. 10]. This is a very real, very serious issue that has driven many people to open shelters across the country, including in the Chicago area. People laugh because the animals are small. But they experience hurt, neglect and, unfortunately, death like so many animals without homes.

People are so quick to dismiss them and assign a value based on the price at a pet store, but guinea pigs live much longer than people assume and require a significant amount of daily care.

These animals are wonderful, loving pets and deserve a future just like any other pet.
